National Rankings

Rutgers is widely recognized as among the top public research universities in the United States. It is the only public university in New Jersey to be invited to join the Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the 62 leading universities in North America. The Newark Campus is consistently ranked the most diverse in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, while numerous academic departments are considered among the top 10 in their discipline.

 

12 Programs at the Top

A national study of doctoral education released by the National Research Council rates Rutgers highly among U.S. public research universities in 12 fields.

Those receiving high marks include English, food science, history, microbiology and molecular genetics, philosophy, and sociology.

Other highly rated programs are biochemistry, ecology and evolution, linguistics, mathematics, planning and public policy, and plant biology.

6th for Best Return on Investment

In a January 2009 article titled “Why the Ivies Aren’t Worth It,” SmartMoney, the Wall Street Journal magazine, concludes, “An elite-college degree is nice, but once you factor in tuition and future salaries, public schools jump to the head of the class.” Indeed, in analyzing the relationship between tuition and graduates’ earning power, SmartMoney placed Rutgers sixth among public schools nationally for return on investment with a payback of 214 percent.
